The NZIMA Workshop on Combinatorics and its Applications, Auckland, New Zealand

The New Zealand Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (NZIMA) will host a workshop on Combinatorics and its Applications during July 12-16, 2004.  The venue will be the University of Auckland.

Symposium on Polynomial-Based Cryptography, Melbourne, Australia

Topic: The topic of this symposium is the study of cryptographic schemes based on polynomial algebras.

Organisers: Lynn Batten (Deakin), Kathy Horadam (RMIT), Igor Shparlinski (Macquarie), Andreas Stein (Illinois), Hugh Williams (Calgary).

Invited speakers (partial list): John Cannon (Australia), Gary Carter (Australia), Kwangjo Kim (Korea), Bill Millan (Australia), Josef Pieprzyk (Australia), Alf van der Poorten (Australia), Andreas Stein (USA), Hugh Williams (Canada).

Format: The symposium will be Oberwolfach-style - casual, with talks of various lengths from invited participants.  However, there will be some space for contributed talks, abstracts for which should be submitted by June 4.  There will be a student day on June 11 and an industry workshop on June 12.

Special Session in Combinatorics (Australian Mathematics Society Meeting), Melbourne, Australia

The 48th Annual Meeting of the Australian Mathematics Society will be held at RMIT University from September 28th to October 1st 2004.

Asha Rao (RMIT) and Brendan McKay (ANU) are organising a special session in Combinatorics, which is cosponsored by CMSA.

Members of CMSA are strongly urged to contribute talks to this session. Also if there is someone visiting who you think would like to speak, please encourage them to do so.   Abstracts can be sent to either Asha (asha-at-rmit.edu.au) or Brendan (bdm-at-cs.anu.edu.au).

News from Sanming Zhou of the University of Melbourne:   Glad to inform all of you that I have been awarded the 2003 Kirkman Medal of the Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications (ICA).   On the career front, I recently started working as a Lecturer on a continuing basis in the Operations Research Group of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, The University of Melbourne.   I have resigned from my APD (Australian PostDoctoral) fellowship which I held since the beginning of 2003 in the same department.   (My Email: S.Zhou-at-ms.unimelb.edu.au)   (Congratulations to Sanming!)

News from Anne Street:   On May 31, Elizabeth (Liz) Billington took over as Director of the Centre for Discrete Mathematics and Computing at the University of Queensland from Anne Street (aps-at-maths.uq.edu.au).   The brand new CDMC website (http://www.maths.uq.edu.au/cdmc) is now operational.

SIX-MONTH THEMATIC PROGRAMME ON COMBINATORICS AND ITS APPLICATIONS
New Zealand Institute of Mathematics & its Applications (NZIMA), July-Dec, 2004

Last year, the New Zealand government established five Centres of Research Excellence.  This initiative was to encourage world-class research, which will contribute to New Zealand's development.  The New Zealand Institute of Mathematics & its Applications (NZIMA) is one of the new Centres of Research Excellence, formed as a partnership between the University of Auckland (its host) and the NZ Mathematics Research Institute (Inc.).

We are pleased to announce that the NZIMA will run a special 6-month thematic programme in Combinatorics and its Applications, July-December 2004.  This programme will involve a concentrated period of activity centred around a workshop at the University of Auckland in July 2004 and a conference in December 2004, participation by visiting lead experts, and the appointment of a two-year postdoctoral fellow and a number of postgraduate research students.  Besides Combinatorics, additional points of focus will be applications to computational biology, complexity theory, theoretical computer science and abstract algebra -- areas that are already well developed in New Zealand.

University of Tasmania will hire a new Head soon for its School of Computing

CMSA members specialising in Combinatorial Computing may be interested to know that our university (University of Tasmania) is planning to advertise for a new Professor and Head for our School of Computing.  We will be looking for a strong researcher.  At present, the intention is to advertise in June-July 2004, so that the person hired will begin work in 2005.

The Australian bank account of ICA is now closed

The Australian bank account of ICA (The Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications) has been closed.  Payment of dues may be made in either of the following ways:

• by Visa card.  Send the name as it appears on the card, the card number, and the expiry date to the ICA Registrar:  Ernest Ruet d'Auteuil, The Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications, 81 Walnut Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, R3G 1N9.
• by cheque for the equivalent amount in Australian dollars, which our bank in Winnipeg can now handle.

Note:  A cheque in US dollars can be processed in Winnipeg, but only if it is issued on a US bank with the nine-digit American Banking Association (ABA) number micro-encoded on the cheque.

Instructions to authors are also available at this web site.

The contents of all volumes, 1 to 29, are listed at the above web page.  We also now have free public access to the full contents of Volumes 1 to 21 inclusive.  A new volume is added every six months, so that all but the last four years are available free.

Submissions to the AJC may be sent to ajc-at-maths.uq.edu.au.  Electronic submissions are encouraged.  For paper submissions, please check the web page.
